A clash broke out between supporters of Kushtia-3 (Sadar) MP Mufti Amir Hamza and activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad at Chhoy Raster Mor in the town on Saturday evening.
During the clash, Gono Odhikar Parishad activists reportedly attacked the lawmaker’s vehicle.
The incident occurred around 6pm while the MP was travelling towards his residence under police protection.
Quoting locals, police said Gono Odhikar Parishad members were holding a protest rally against a recent statement made by Hamza.
As the MP’s motorcade approached, the protesters intensified their chanting, leading to a heated argument and subsequent physical confrontation between the two groups.
During the chaos, the MP’s car was attacked and its window glass was shattered.
Iqbal Hossain, acting Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital, said five to six people from both sides sustained injuries, though none were in serious condition.
Enamul Haque, secretary of the Kushtia district Jamaat unit, said several of their members were injured, but the MP remained unharmed.
Kabir Hossain Matubbor, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kushtia Model Police Station, said the situation escalated after both groups traded slogans.
Additional police forces were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control, he added.
