Senior Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division, Md. Ehsanul Haque, emphasized the need for collective efforts to ensure safe roads and comfortable travel for all.
Speaking at a public hearing and discussion on Tuesday, titled “Identifying Problems in Public Transport and Addressing Solutions,” organized by the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) at its Tejgaon office in Dhaka, the Senior Secretary highlighted the devastating impact of road accidents.
He noted that accidents not only result in the loss of lives but also leave many families shattered. To address these issues, he urged all stakeholders, including bus owners, transport workers, passengers, and pedestrians, to work together and play their part in reducing road accidents.
Ehsanul Haque also mentioned that the government is actively working to restore safety and discipline on the roads and sought the cooperation of everyone involved. He concluded his remarks by thanking the participants for their active engagement and support in addressing these critical issues.
BRTA Chairman Md. Yasin, who also spoke at the event, called for shared responsibility among all stakeholders to bring about meaningful reforms in the public transport sector. He emphasized that public transport serves everyone and stressed the need for mutual respect among owners, workers, passengers, and pedestrians to restore discipline. Highlighting the importance of traffic laws, he stated that the government is working to raise public awareness about these regulations, which are vital for improving road safety.
Presiding over the session, DTCA Executive Director and Additional Secretary Nilima Akhter described the current time as ideal for implementing much-needed reforms in the transport sector. She said that DTCA is continuously working to create a sustainable, planned, and modernized transportation system for Dhaka. Nilima Akhter called on all stakeholders to support DTCA’s initiatives and expressed gratitude to the participants for their input before officially concluding the meeting.
The event was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Home Affairs, Cabinet Division, BRTA, BRTC, and other relevant agencies. Participants also included members of bus owners’ associations, journalists, civil society representatives, and students, along with senior government officials.
