Jahangirnagar University (JU) Chhatra Dal activists detained a joint general secretary of Pabna University of Science and Technology Chhatra League over allegations of putting up BCL posters on campus and making offensive Facebook comments about a female student.
The JCD activists handed Saiful Islam, 26, to police on Sunday afternoon after catching him from his mother’s tea stall in the university’s transport area.
Saiful, a 2016-17 session student of Pabna University of Science and Technology, is from Maishari village in Shariatpur’s Vedarganj upazila.
JU Chhatra Dal leaders alleged that he put up BCL posters on campus and distributed food among rickshaw and auto-rickshaw drivers in the name of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
They also claimed his phone contained records of communication with BCL leaders and former JUCSU vice-president Abdur Rashid Zitu.
The allegations surfaced after Saiful allegedly shared a video of Gono Odhikar Parishad leader Sharmin Akter Sathi on Facebook and made offensive and misleading comments about her and the organisation.
Sathi, a 46th-batch student of JU’s Botany Department and a member of the party’s central committee, said she confronted Saiful with classmates after learning about the posts. He claimed his Facebook account had been hacked, she said.
Sathi alleged that a subsequent check of his phone revealed disparaging content about students and photographs with former BCL leader Saddam.
JU Chhatra Dal convener Jahir Uddin Mohammad Babar said they found communication records involving several BCL leaders, including JU BCL leader Akhtaruzzaman Sohel and Al-Biruni Hall leader Sohel Rana.
“We verified the information before handing him over to police,” Babar said.
Assistant Proctor Associate Prof Abdus Sattar Joy said police seized Saiful’s phone and took him to the station. He added that the university administration was preparing to file a case.
Tarikul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, said police brought Saiful to the station following a call from the university administration. “We are checking the allegations. No case has been filed yet,” he said.
