The government has appointed senior journalist Muhammad Kader Gani Chowdhury as Managing Director and Chief Editor of state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
The Ministry of Public Administration issued a gazette notification on Thursday in this regard.
According to the notification, the appointment was made under the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha Act-2018 on a contractual basis for one year.
His appointment will take effect from the date of his joining and is subject to his relinquishing any employment or professional engagement with any other profession, business, or government, semi-government or private institution or organisation.
Kader Gani Chowdhury replaces Md Kamal Uddin Mozumder, better known as Kamal Uddin Shabuj, who was appointed BSS Managing Director and Chief Editor on April 7 last.
Kader Gani Chowdhury is a well-known and popular figure in the journalism fraternity. He played a leading role on the streets during the 17-year-long anti-fascist movement.
He obtained his master’s degree in History from Dhaka University. During his student life, he also served as Joint General Secretary of the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association.
Kader Gani Chowdhury began his professional career in 1993 as a university reporter for the daily Dinkal. During his long career, he worked for Dinkal, Daily Ittefaq and Amar Desh, and also served as Deputy Managing Director of East West Media Group PLC.
He has been highly active and popular in leading professional journalists’ organisations. He is currently serving as Secretary General of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), the apex platform of journalists in Bangladesh.
Kader Gani Chowdhury is also a member of the Jatiya Press Club Management Committee and Member Secretary of the Bangladesh Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad.
Earlier, he served as President of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) and Senior Joint General Secretary of the Jatiya Press Club.
Qader Gani Chowdhury, hailing from Fatikchhari upazila in Chattogram, is the father of one daughter.
