A member of a Kased team participating in Muharram observances died of suspected heatstroke in Rajbari's Goalanda upazila on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Babu Sheikh, 55, son of Hamed Sheikh of the Daulatdia Canal Ghat area in the upazila.
According to family members and local sources, Babu Sheikh was taking part in a mourning procession organised by followers of Moksed Mridha of Ujanchar union in observance of the 10th of Muharram, marking the holy day of Ashura.
As the procession was approaching Moksed Mridha's residence around 12:30 pm, Babu Sheikh fell seriously ill amid the intense heat and collapsed.
Fellow participants immediately rushed him to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Shariful Islam, Residential Medical Officer of Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, said the man was brought to the hospital after 12:30 pm in a dead condition.
"It is presumed that he died of heatstroke before reaching the hospital," the physician said.
Babu Sheikh had joined the Kased team that set out from Moksed Mridha's residence on June 18 as part of Muharram observances followed by devotees associated with Garpara in Manikganj.
Following the incident, funeral prayers for the deceased were held after Maghrib prayers at the Shaheed Mohiuddin Ansar Club premises in Goalanda Bazar, where members of various Kased teams gathered to pay their respects.
Every year, several Kased groups participate in mourning processions and religious observances during Muharram. On the 10th of Muharram, the groups traditionally reunite before concluding their commemorative activities.
