Former sub-inspector Sukanto Das, who has been accused of attacks on student-led protesters during the July uprising, was on Thursday arrested from Chuadanga, two days after his release that sparked protests.
A team of Khulna police with the help of Chuandanga police arrested Sukanto from Alamdanga upazila of the district, said Julfiker Ali Haidar, commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP). He is now being taken to Khulna from Chuadanga.
Sukanto faces several cases filed with Khulna Police Station over his alleged attacks on students and mass protesters during last year’s mass upsurge that toppled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
On Tuesday Sukanto was travelling to Khulna to appear before the court in a case. When he reached Shiromoni area in Khulna city, local people beat him up mercilessly and handed him to Sadar Police Station.
Later, he was released from police custody.
Angered by the incident, local people on Wednesday surrounded the Sadar Police Station. They also put the main gate under lock and key. The police launched a hunt for Sukanto following the protests.
