With a view to supporting medical research and deep respect for humanity, the late Mahbubur Rahman, a valiant freedom fighter who passed away aged 74 on December 12, set a rare example by donating his body posthumously to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
The initiative is meant to contribute to the expansion of medical research and medical education. Uniquely, it meant both he and his wife Giti Rahman, who passed away in 2019, had donated their bodies to medical research. Their family fully supported this humanitarian decision of the late couple.
On Saturday, the body of Mahbubur Rahman was received by the Special Assistant on Health Affairs to the Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman, on behalf of BSMMU.
The body donation ceremony was presided over by Professor Shahinul Alam, Vice Chancellor of BSMMU. Teachers and students of the Anatomy Department of the university were also present at the ceremony. Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman administered the oath to the students to show due respect and reverence to the body during dissection.
Born in Jamalpur district in 1950, the late Mahbub Ur Rahman was a heroic freedom fighter during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He took active part in the war as a member of the famous 'Crack Platoon' under Captain Haider.
As an engineer during the establishment of the Local Government Engineering Department of the Government of Bangladesh, he played an important role in building the physical infrastructure and administrative structure of the institution. After serving the country for more than three decades, he retired from government service in 1984.
After that, he contributed his experience to various international organizations until 2018. During his retirement, he dedicated himself to serving humanity.
Posthumous body donation is a great act that can increase awareness in society and play a helpful role in the advancement of science. This outstanding example of this progressive family will inspire future generations for human welfare.
The Bangladesh Research Analysis and Information Network (BRAIN), expressed its deepest respect to the late couple’s decision and sincere condolences to their family.
