A 16-year-old boy drowned in the sea off Cox's Bazar sea beach while trying to save a man on Friday morning, police said.
Md Tahsin, son of Mohammad Hossain of Cumilla's Devidwar, was a student of Kasemur Ulum Madrasa.
Md Mizanuzzaman, assistant superintendent of Tourist police, said Tahsin along with two friends came to visit Cox's Bazar yesterday (Thursday).
Around 7am on Friday, they were bathing in the sea at Sugandha Point of Cox's Bazar sea beach.
As Tahsin saw a man apparently drowning and seeking help, he tried to bring him to the bund but drowned himself. The man he was trying to rescue swam to safety, police said.
After Tahsin was washed away by the tide, lifeguards and tourist police recovered his body and brought him to sadar hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, a businessman named Zahirul Islam, son of Rahim Khan, who came from Narayanganj, was washed away by the sea around 11:30am on the same day, but he was rescued from the sea and taken to Cox's Bazar sadar hospital.
He is now undergoing treatment at the hospital.
