A Joypurhat court on Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife over a family dispute at Akkelpur upazila in 2023.
Judge of the Joypurhat Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Md Hasibul Haque pronounced the verdict in the morning.
The court also fined the convict Tk 20,000, in default of which he will serve another year in prison.
The convict was identified as Sirajul Islam Sheikh alias Lalu, son of late Abdus Sattar Sheikh from Gudumba village under Akkelpur upazila.
According to the prosecution, Sirajul married Panna Bibi in 2010. Frequent quarrels broke out between them as they had no children.
On the night of March 7, 2023, Sirajul strangled Panna with a rope and slit her throat during an altercation.
Police recovered the body following the incident, and the victim's father filed a case with Akkelpur Police Station the following day.
