A man has been sentenced to 15 days' simple imprisonment for allegedly misbehaving with an on-duty traffic police officer and spreading what police described as false and misleading information on social media aimed at tarnishing the image of the Bangladesh Police.
However, the identity of the accused has not been disclosed.
According to the Traffic (Motijheel Division) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the incident took place around 11:15am on Saturday in front of Abesh Hotel in Banasree B Block under Rampura Police Station.
Traffic Sergeant Mozammel Haque of the Rampura Traffic Zone was recording video evidence to file a case against a pickup van, bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-Na-21-8671, for illegal roadside parking, according to a press release issued by the DMP on monday.
At that time, the pickup driver allegedly obstructed the sergeant and began recording him on video. As the officer was leaving the spot, the man allegedly made derogatory remarks about the Bangladesh Police, according to the DMP.
Police also alleged that the man later uploaded a video on his Facebook page, "Road Scope Dhaka," containing false, fabricated and misleading information about the incident.
Following the incident, police conducted an operation and detained the accused around 11:30am the same day from the Abul Hotel crossing of Chowdhurypara.
The detainee was later produced before a Special Magistrate Court through Rampura Police Station. The court sentenced him to 15 days' simple imprisonment, police said.
