An old man was killed and at least 10 others were injured during a violent clash involving cocktail and hand bomb explosions in Shariatpur’s Jajira upazila on Monday evening.
The deceased was identified as Mannan Sardar, 70, son of the late Aliuddin Sardar of Chardhupur Charkandi area in Senerchar union.
According to police and locals, the clash erupted between supporters of Rezaul Shikdar and Tamij Kha over establishing dominance in the Laukhola area of Mulna union. The confrontation, marked by a series of cocktail explosions that triggered widespread panic, occurred around evening.
Mannan Sardar, a supporter of Rezaul Shikdar, was rushed to the Jajira Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician pronounced him dead. Another individual, identified as Ripon Molla from the rival group, sustained a severe hand injury from a bomb blast. He was initially treated locally before being referred to Dhaka for advanced care.
Dr. Roman Badshah, Jajira Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, said that two victims of bomb blasts were brought to the facility, noting that one had a severely damaged hand while the other was declared dead upon examination.
Muhammad Mohiuddin Meraj, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), said that additional police forces have been deployed to the scene to maintain order and that legal action is being taken.
