The incident took place during Zohr prayers at Golerhat Mosque of the village, said Officer-in-Charge of Kazirhat Police Station Siddiqur Rahman.
According to locals and police, Nazrul had a dispute with his elder brother Harun Sardar over ancestral land. The conflict reportedly escalated after Nazrul returned home from abroad.
Witnesses said Nazrul was offering prayers inside the mosque when Harun entered the mosque, struck him with a sharp weapon, and hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him injured.
Locals rescued Nazrul and started for Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries on the way near Mirganj Ferry.
His body was sent to the hospital morgue for post-mortem.
OC Siddiqur Rahman said operations are underway to arrest the accused.
