Police recovered the dismembered body of a 14-year-old girl from a bush adjacent to a graveyard in the Chandannagar area in Singair upazila of Manikganj on Sunday, six days after she went missing.
The victim, Maria, was a Class-VIII student of Sahrail High School in Saista union of the upazila and daughter of expatriate Mizan of Lakshmipur Dewanbari area.
Police said the body was recovered around 4:30pm. Her school bag was also found nearby.
According to police and family sources, Maria went missing on June 15 after leaving her mobile phone at home. Her family searched different places but failed to trace her.
Locals discovered the body in a bush near a graveyard under Jamirta union on Sunday and informed police.
A Class-X student has been taken into custody for questioning in connection with the incident.
Police and relatives said Maria and the male student were earlier caught in a compromising situation inside a classroom during tiffin hours. Following the incident, guardians of both students were called in, and both were issued transfer certificates (TCs) by the school authorities.
Officer-in-Charge of Singair Police Station Mazharul Islam said the body was sent to Manikganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
He added that the matter is being investigated seriously and efforts were underway to gather evidence and identify those involved.
