Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) men arrested a member of a fraud gang involved in conning mobile banking users out of money from the city’s Mirpur area on Thursday night.
The arrestee is Md Sohel Ahmed, 36, son of late MA Khaleque of Barishal.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Rab-3 raided the first floor of a five-storey building in Mirpur-1 around 11:30pm and arrested Sohel, said Lt Col Rakibul Hasan, commanding officer of Rab-3, on Friday.
The elite force seized a laptop, a Multi SIM Gateway device, a signal buster, three modems and huge mobile SIM cards from his possession, he said.
Rab official also said Sohel and his associates had been using advanced technology devices for conning many mobile banking users out of money through cloning their SIM cards since 2017.
Sohel used to collect account numbers from agents and PINs applying various tricks, the Rab official added.
