Dhaka, Sep 14 (UNB) - Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam on Saturday said the government will introduce more water transport on canals and lakes of the capital to rescue them from illegal encroachment and pollution, and at the same time ease the pressure on the congested roads.
The minister said this while speaking as chief guest at a programme to award the highest bill collectors on behalf of Dhaka Wasa.
“Many canals and lakes of the city have been polluted and invaded by grabbers. Illegal establishments will be evicted and soil will be extracted from the filled lakes to introduce water transports as in Hatirjhil project,” he said.
Implementation of such system would save both money and time of the people and also reduce traffic pressure on the roads, the minister said.
Ten of the 33 banks authorized to collect bills on behalf of Dhaka Wasa were awarded in the programme chaired by Dhaka Wasa managing Director Taqsem A Khan. The billing period covered was the 2018-19 fiscal.
