Ilias Kanchan, founder and chairman of Nischa, inaugurated the programme at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.
Kanchan said 120 organisations, along with the government, will observe the ‘National Road Safety Day’ on October 22. It will be celebrated in different countries including USA, UK, and Saudi Arabia.
Kanchan noted that lack of skills of the drivers was one of the key reasons for accidents.
He also blamed “flawed” transport system, lack of monitoring, weak traffic system, lack of awareness, reckless driving, poor road condition, lack of political will and lack of implementation of law.
“We’ve been able to raise awareness to some extent through the movement. But we’re still worried. Last year, 3,699 people were killed and 7,425 were injured in 3,109 accidents,” he said.
