PMO Spokeperson Mahdi Amin on Tuesday said the government wants to build a Bangladesh where people can succeed based on their merit without having to belong to any particular political party.
“No one will need to belong to any specific political party to succeed or achieve something meaningful in life. Everyone will have the utmost right to succeed without discrimination based solely on their own merit and to receive support from the state, the political sphere, and the government,” he said.
He made these remarks while adressing a discussion session titled “Democracy, Human Rights, and Accountable Governance” arranged by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.
“For that, it is not only the government or those involved in politics who have to work together. Everyone must come forward,” he said.
He also said, “We want to ensure human rights, freedom of expression and the rule of law. We want to build a Bangladesh where there will be true equality, human dignity and social justice.”
The PM’s Adviser urged stakeholders from all sections and professions in policymaking, consultations, discussions to participate in constructive criticism.
He said the government would focus particularly on the country’s youth and women, describing them as major demographic dividends with significant potential to contribute to Bangladesh’s development.
“Our responsibility is to utilise the potential and talent of our young people,” he said.
He also urged civil society organisations to play their watchdog role positively and provide suggestions to the government where necessary.
“We will embrace their advice and, if there are shortcomings, we will try to improve. That is our main objective,” he added.
He called for national unity despite differences in political ideology and opinion.
“We may have different political ideologies and different opinions, but we must remember that if Bangladesh comes first, then Bangladesh’s interests must be given priority,” he said.
He said government policies should reflect the aspirations of the people.
“As this government belongs to the people and Bangladesh belongs to the people, every policy should likewise belong to the people,” he added.
The program was chaired by TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman. BNP lawmaker Nawshad Zamir, Socialist Party of Bangladesh central committee member Manisha Chakrabarty, Tasnim Zara, among others, spoke athe the event.
