State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Md Nurul Haque Nur on Wednesday warned against attempts by "vested interests" to monopolise the narrative of the July Movement, drawing a parallel to how the history of the Liberation War was previously handled.
Speaking during the discussion on the thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech in Parliament, Nur called for an end to the ongoing propaganda surrounding the movement.
"Certain groups are trying to hijack the narrative of the July Movement, much like what we saw with the history of our Liberation War," he said.

Addressing the younger generation's perception of the struggle, the State Minister remarked, "Many of our young friends may not realise the extent of the sacrifices and contributions behind this struggle. They might think it is like a 90-minute football match where someone scored a goal in the last five minutes by chance and now considers themselves the best player."
Referring to the "July National Charter" and the opposition's recent rhetoric, Nur – a Member of Parliament from the BNP-led alliance – clarified the document's framework for resolving political disagreements.
He noted that the Charter explicitly stated that issues lacking immediate consensus among political parties should be taken to the people.
"The public mandate will ultimately decide those issues. It is natural that the BNP will implement the points except those where they gave note of dissent previously. Mixing truth with falsehood to spread propaganda is something our friends in the opposition should avoid," the state minister added.
He called on opposition lawmakers to move away from "opposition for the sake of opposition" and instead focus on the nation's progress over the next five years. "I would urge my friends in the opposition – for the sake of the Almighty, engage in constructive criticism and provide positive suggestions to support this government over the next five years," he said.
Nur concluded his speech by expressing confidence in the future, stating, "InshaAllah, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, we will move the country forward over the coming five years."
