Police detained a man from Gazipur on Friday for his alleged involvement with the sensational mugging in Dhaka's Mirpur.
The detainee has been named as Imran Khan Sakib alias Shakil, 35.
Md Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said that a team of Mirpur model police station conducted a raid in Kudab Paschimpara area of Pubail in Gazipur in the morning and arrested him.
A motorbike and Tk 2500 in cash were also recovered from his possession, Talebur said.
On April 15 around 4:24am, a 27-year-old girl Angyazai Marma and her cousin riding on a rickshaw were returning home in Paschim Shewrapara.
As their rickshaw approached Mannan Sarani, Shakil and two others arrived on a motorcycle, brandishing a sharp machete and threatening the victims.
The muggers took away a wallet from Angyazai, which contained Tk 2,500 in cash, three credit cards, her national ID card, a metrocard, and other documents.
The miscreants also snatched a silver chain from her cousin's neck before fleeing on their motorcycle.
A widespread criticism was triggered when a video went viral on social media showing that the muggers were snatching valuables from the duo.
Two days after the incident, the victims filed a case with the model police station in this regard.
After scrutinising the video footage collected from the area, police identified accused Shakil, others and detained him from the Gazipur.
According to information gleaned from the detainee, the sharp machete used during the mugging was recovered from the rooftop of a furniture shop in Purbo Monipur area.
Police claimed that Shakil is a seasoned mugger with multiple cases over robbery, theft, and narcotics.
