Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of veteran politician Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar.
In a condolence message, he described Jamiruddin Sircar, former acting President and Speaker, Language Movement hero and member of the BNP National Standing Committee, as a wise, honest and dedicated personality.
The Prime Minister said he had served the country with integrity, wisdom and a strong sense of responsibility throughout his long political career.
He noted that Jamiruddin Sircar had also held several key government positions, including education minister and state minister for land, foreign affairs, and housing and public works.
Tarique Rahman said the nation will remember with deep respect his contributions to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting parliamentary practices and serving the people.
He said the veteran politician remained steadfast throughout his life in upholding the ideals of Bangladeshi nationalism, democracy and people's rights.
The Prime Minister said the veteran politician never wavered from his ideals throughout the party's long struggle and periods of adversity. “Despite political repression, persecution and other challenges, he steadfastly upheld the party's nationalist ideals with dedication, wisdom and firm resolve.”
Referring to the anti-autocracy movement over the past 17 years, he said Jamiruddin Sircar had played a courageous and significant role in the struggle to restore democracy, voting rights and fundamental freedoms, adding that his contributions will remain an important chapter in both the BNP's history and the country's democratic journey.
Describing his death as an irreparable loss, Tarique Rahman said the country has lost an experienced politician, accomplished parliamentarian and true patriot whose ideals, integrity and lifelong public service will continue to inspire future generations.
He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family, relatives, colleagues, admirers and well-wishers.
Jamiruddin Sircar passed away at a city hospital in the early hours of Sunday at the age of 95.
