Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Savar on Sunday to inspect a flower and fruit garden developed on a former garbage dumping site along the Dhaka-Aricha Highway.
During the visit, the prime minister will plant a sapling at the site.
Later, he will attend the National Std. Awarding Ceremony at the 9th Infantry Division of Savar Cantonment at 9am, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Security has been strengthened along the Dhaka-Aricha highway and at other key locations ahead of the prime minister’s visit.
The garden has been developed along nearly four kilometres of the highway, from Madhumati Model Town in the Boliarpur area to Salehpur Bridge, transforming a garbage dump that had remained there for nearly two decades.
The project involved removing around 10,000 tonnes of waste, filling 8,800 square metres with soil and another 8,800 square metres with sand, and developing drainage, netting and green spaces.
A total of 6,930 trees and plants of different species, including coconut, neem, betel nut, palmyra, Madhabilata, Syzygium, casuarina and rangon, have been planted at the site. Solar panels, a windmill and 120 electric lights have also been installed.
The transformation was carried out between July 15 and September 24, 2026, following the prime minister’s instructions and under the supervision of Dhaka Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanom.
On July 7, Tarique Rahman noticed the garbage dump while travelling to an event at the Bangladesh Army’s summer training camp in Singair, Manikganj.
The project, titled “Waste Removal, Earth Filling, Palisading, Surface Drain Construction, Netting and Greening beside the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Savar Upazila”, was implemented by Savar Upazila Parishad with technical assistance from the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Savar.
On Saturday, BNP Standing Committee member and Dhaka-2 MP Aman Ullah Aman visited the transformed site and expressed satisfaction with the development.
Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Saiful Islam said the initiative to turn a garbage dump into a place where flowers bloom was more than a beautification project.
“Under the prime minister’s direction, this initiative has become a symbol of cleanliness, environmental awareness and civic responsibility,” he said.
