Bangladesh Police on Saturday dismissed as false a social media claim that the bodies of several Awami League and Chhatra League leaders and activists had been found floating in the Turag River, urging people not to be misled by what it described as a baseless rumour.
In a statement, Police Headquarters said a post circulating on social media under the headline "Bodies of seven Awami League-Chhatra League leaders and activists found floating in the Turag River" was completely unfounded and aimed at creating confusion among the public.
Police said no such incident had been reported.
The statement alleged that a vested group was spreading the misinformation in an attempt to undermine the morale of law enforcement agencies.
Police said they were actively working to identify those responsible for spreading the false information and would take legal action against anyone found involved in the misinformation campaign.
The law enforcement agency also urged the public not to pay heed to rumours or unverified information circulating on social media.
