A Dhaka court on Wednesday issued a warrant for the arrest of actress Pori Moni in an attempted murder case filed by former Dhaka Boat Club Limited (DBCL) President Nasir Uddin Mahmood.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahfuzur Rahman passed the order as she failed to appear before the court for scheduled hearing.
During the hearing, the complainant's lawyer sought cancellation of the bail granted to the accused, while the lawyer representing Pori Moni sought an adjournment, saying she could not turn up due to an allergy-related illness.
The court subsequently accepted the complainant's plea, cancelled her bail and ordered the issuance of an arrest warrant.
Earlier, on January 26 last year, the court framed charges in the case and ordered the start of the trial. An arrest warrant was also issued for Pori Moni on that day. She later surrendered before the court and secured bail.
In 2024, the investigation officer, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Dhaka District Inspector Md Monir Hossain, submitted an investigation report to the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Dhaka, saying the allegations of assault and intimidation against Pori Moni and her costume designer Junaid Bogdadi Jimmy alias Jim had been substantiated.
However, the investigation found no evidence against another accused, Fatema Tuz Jannat Boni.
The court subsequently accepted the PBI report and summoned Pori Moni and Jimmy to appear before it. They appeared before the court on June 25, 2024, and secured bail.
On July 6, 2021, Nasir Uddin, a businessman and then president of the Boat Club, filed the case against Pori Moni and two others at a Dhaka court.
According to the case statement, Pori Moni and her associates were accustomed to consuming alcohol and frequently visited different high-end clubs, where they allegedly consumed alcohol and took away additional supplies without paying.
The statement further alleged that Pori Moni used her connections with police officials to threaten people with harassment through false cases.
It said shortly after midnight on June 9, 2021, Pori Moni and the other accused entered the Boat Club in Savar and used a toilet on the second floor. They later stayed at the club and consumed alcohol.
At one stage, they allegedly assaulted Nasir Uddin, threatened to kill him and vandalised the club.
The complainant also alleged that, in an attempt to cover up the incident, Pori Moni later filed a case at Savar Police Station against Nasir Uddin and another person, accusing them of attempted rape and attempted murder.
