Workers from several garment factories in Gazipur on Monday blocked the highway for the seventh consecutive day, demanding a minimum basic salary of Tk 23,000.
They started their protest march in Gazipur's Chandra, Naojor, Noljani, Bhogra and Maleker Bari areas this morning.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bason Police Station Abu Siddique said the workers created a blockade on the road, demanding wage hike, this morning. Several vehicles were vandalised on the road.
When a group of workers tried to vandalise vehicles in Bhogra area of Gazipur, police fired teargas shells and sound grenades to disperse the workers.
At one point, the agitated workers of Columbia Factory set a pick-up van on fire on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Bhogra area, which disrupted traffic heavily in both directions, he added. Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Tangail highway remained suspended.

Later, police brought the situation under control, added the OC.
On October 23, workers of several factories, including Logos Apparels, ATS and Bay-Footwear Ltd, started the protest demanding salary hike in Mouchak and Telirchala areas of Gazipur's Kaliakoir upazila.
