Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s Political Assistant Rashed Khan has posted a video on Facebook showing him tearing a copy of the newspaper Amar Desh on Saturday.
He posted the video on his personal Facebook account at 6:38pm.
The video was captioned: “Jamaat funding behind two misleading lead stories within 15 days?”
In the video, Rashed alleged that a report published on October 15 had broadly accused him while making only limited mention of his activities.
He said that despite joining BNP, he was being linked to Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Rashed said the report in Amar Desh was published following his recent allegations against Jamaat-e-Islami.
He claimed that Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar had held meetings with senior Indian intelligence officials and challenged the party to investigate the allegation.
He said he is ready to provide evidence to Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman or the investigation team formed by the party. If the allegation was proved false, Jamaat could file a defamation case against him, he added.
In a separate Facebook post, Rashed alleged that Amar Desh had published two lead stories against him over the past 15 days to build a false narrative.
He said he had torn up what he described as a false narrative linking him with Hasina's son.
He further alleged that Jamaat's statement on the issue immediately afterwards indicated that the newspaper had published the narrative against him with the party's funding.
“If Amar Desh has to build a false narrative against me at Jamaat's advice, then I have no objection if the newspaper is renamed Jamaat's Desh instead of Amar Desh,” he wrote.
He also questioned the headline of another report, which read: “Hasina's son Joy joins hands with some newly inducted BNP members!”
Rashed asked whether the headline meant that he had joined hands with Joy. He also questioned how Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman could associate him with the Awami League by publishing his photograph alongside Joy's.
He questioned the editor's authority to describe him as a “new BNP member” and said newspaper editors were required to follow editorial policies.
“What editorial policy has he followed in taking up the narrative of portraying me as an Awami League supporter?” Rashed wrote.
He said he had rejected the report by tearing it up, arguing that remaining silent would have allowed the newspaper to continue portraying him in that manner.
Rashed also said he had suffered 15 days of remand torture and been jailed in a case over allegedly making derogatory remarks about Sheikh Hasina.
He said he had the right to reject and protest against what he described as a false narrative published about him without seeking his comments.
Referring to criticism from what he described as Jamaat-aligned journalists over tearing a registered newspaper, Rashed said he had not torn the newspaper itself but had rejected the false narrative linking him with Hasina's son.
He questioned whether he should continue to bear what he called the false stigma of colluding with fascism.
