Three people, including a councillor candidate of the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) election, were injured in a knife attack during a clash between followers of two candidates on Saturday.
The injured are Ashraf Babu, a councillor candidate and vice-president of Rajshahi city unit of Jubo League, and his supporters Rezaul Karim and Joy Hossain.
They were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Saifuddin Shahin, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (Headquarters), said that the supporters of Ashraf Babu and Touhidul Haq Suman locked into an altercation over putting up posters in the city's Shiroil Colony area on Saturday evening.
At one point, the two groups attacked each other, leaving Babu and others injured, he added.
"Additional police were deployed immediately after the incident, he said, adding that preparations are underway to take legal action in this regard."
Councillor candidate Ashraf Babu said, "Seeing fights breaking out between the two groups, I went there to stop them."
“As I approached, they swooped on us with sharp weapons, cutting veins in my hand,” he said.
Denying the allegation, Sumon, former joint general secretary of Rajshahi city unit of Jubo League, claimed that it was Babu's aides who attacked his supporters.
He also claimed that the supporters of Babu vandalised his campaign office and Babu's son threatened him with weapons.
"As the police did not register my complaint, I will go to the Election Commission," he added.
