River Police arrested 188 people during week-long drives conducted across the country to protect fisheries resources and ensure security on waterways.
During the drives, river police also seized 12.42 lakh metres of illegal fishing nets, 264 kgs of fish, 2.74 lakh pieces of shrimp fry, 300 kgs of crab, 120 kgs of jelly-injected shrimp during the drives, according to a press release issued on Thurday.
During the operations, River Police also destroyed 105 bushes and fish shelters set up illegally in rivers.
River police also filed prosecutions against 28 bulkheads for failing to produce valid documents, while seized one dredger.
A total of 143 cases were filed including 104 under fisheries act, 17 for reckless navigation, three each for violations of sand quarry, narcotics and extortion laws, two for robbery, one for theft and four for murder, it said.
The seized illegal fishing nets and jelly-injected shrimp were destroyed, while the recovered shrimp fry were released into water bodies.
The remaining fish were distributed among orphanages, according to River Police.
