The Rural Microenterprise Transformation Project (RMTP), implemented by Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), has made a significant contribution to building a more dynamic, inclusive and sustainable rural economy in Bangladesh, speakers said at the closing ceremony of the six-year initiative on Wednesday.

They said the project has strengthened the role of micro-entrepreneurs in the national economy by increasing the incomes of micro-entrepreneurs, improving food and nutrition security, and expanding agriculture-based value chains.

The RMTP was co-financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and Danida.

The closing event, held at PKSF Bhaban-1 in Dhaka, was presided over by PKSF Chairman Zakir Ahmed Khan. Secretary of the Financial Institutions Division Nazma Mobarek attended the event as the chief guest, while IFAD Bangladesh Country Director Valantine Achancho was present as a special guest.

The welcome address was delivered by PKSF Managing Director Md Fazlul Kader. A project overview was presented by Md Habibur Rahman, Deputy General Manager of PKSF and RMTP Project Coordinator.

Speaking at the event, Nazma Mobarek said the RMTP demonstrated how effective planning, innovation and partnerships can drive meaningful progress in developing rural entrepreneurs and ensuring food security. Building on its success, she added, PKSF is set to launch a new initiative titled “GREEN” also financed by IFAD.

Valantine Achancho described RMTP as “a proof of concept at scale”, noting that integrating finance, training and market access through strong institutions can create lasting transformation beyond a project's term.

"It is not just the closing of a project, but a demonstration of what is possible when vision, partnership and effective implementation come together," he said, adding that the initiative marks a transition to a new phase of ambition.

Zakir Ahmed Khan said RMTP stands as a successful model for sustainable transformation in the rural economy. "Its effective approaches will be replicated across different contexts, from rural to urban settings," he added.

In his remarks, Fazlul Kader highlighted that the project expanded financial services for micro-entrepreneurs, introduced modern technologies, strengthened market linkages, and supported branding and certification efforts.

He reaffirmed PKSF's commitment to promoting decent working conditions, enhancing skills and addressing risks to ensure sustainable development of microenterprises.

According to the project presentation, RMTP reached more than 750,000 families through 90 agriculture-based value chain sub-projects. Among beneficiaries, agricultural production increased by 66 percent, income rose by 49 percent, and profits grew by 41 percent.

At the event, four entrepreneurs shared their success stories, describing how the project helped them transition from job seekers to job creators by boosting production, increasing income and expanding market access.

Several participants also received national recognition, while products such as cheese, beef pickles and a variety of vegetables produced under the project are now being exported, adding a new dimension to the country's export basket.
