Locals in a Raozan village sprang into action and managed to detain nine suspected robbers before handing them over to police, in the wake of a robbery at an expatriate’s house located in a village in Dewanpur union early Tuesday.
Witnesses said a gang of 14–15 robbers entered the two-storey house of Ahmad Hossain Babul, who lives abroad, around 1:30am and kept the house inmates hostage at knifepoint.
Later, they locked them in a room and looted cash, gold ornaments, imitation jewellery and mobile phones from the house.
Hearing the hostages' screams for help, locals encircled the area, effectively cutting off the criminals' escape routes and managed to catch nine people from Pahartoli and Bagoan areas of the upazila.
Later, they beat them up mercilessly and handed them over to police.
One gold chain, ear rings, 13 gold bangles, three bracelets, one watch, Tk 4,984 cash, one mobile phone and some equipment using during robbery were recovered from their possession.
Russel Ahmed, additional superintendent of Ctg police, said a case was filed with Raozan Police Station.
