An indigenous farmer, who sustained severe injuries in an attack by a herd of wild elephants in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur on Tuesday night, died at a hospital early Friday.
Bijoy Sangma, 52, was son of Stephen Marak of Purbo Samshchura village under the upazila.
Quoting family members and locals, Nalitabari Police Station’s Officer-in-charge Emadadul Hoque said the wild elephants from a nearby hill attacked the farmer when he tried to prevent those from damaging crops in Kalapani area adjacent to Madhutila Eco-park on Tuesday night.
On information, family members rescued him and rushed to Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Sherpur Zilla Hospital when his condition worsened, he said.
He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital, the OC said.
Upzila Nirbahi Officer Khristhafar Himal Ritchil handed over the body to the victim’s family and gave a donation of Tk 25,000.
