The Ministry of Shipping earned Tk 6,575.97 crore in revenue from various sources during the fiscal year 2024–25, marking significant progress in the sector, according to Shipping Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hossain.
The adviser shared the information at a press conference held at the ministry’s conference room at the Secretariat on Monday.
Dr Sakhawat Hossain attributed the achievement to the government’s visionary planning and timely initiatives. He said that the ministry’s revenue in FY2024–25 increased by approximately 9.41% compared to the previous fiscal year.
During the same period, Tk 2,223.33 crore was deposited into the government treasury—an increase of 21.81% year-on-year.
Of the total revenue, the Chittagong Port Authority earned Tk 5,227.55 crore, contributing Tk 1,761.97 crore to the state exchequer. The port also set a new record by handling 32,96,067 containers in the last fiscal year—the highest in its history.
The adviser further informed that the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) posted a record profit of Tk 300 crore by operating five ships on international routes—its highest ever annual profit.
Dr Sakhawat Hossain said that prudent verification and realistic project evaluation had led to cost savings of Tk 2,480 crore across several major initiatives, including the Mongla Port expansion project, BIWTA’s Mithamoin and 35-dredger projects, the Marine Academy simulator project, and the Rabnabad Channel dredging at Payra Port.
He also highlighted a landmark development: for the first time in 54 years, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) to conduct a ship census, aimed at creating a national ship database.
