A young man was detained after allegedly hacking his mother with a sharp weapon over money for drugs in Goalanda municipality of Rajbari on Thursday night.
The victim, Shikha Rani (40), was critically injured in the attack carried out by her son Gobinda Ghosh (19) at Khudiram Sardar Para area under Ward No. 4.
Locals and police said the incident took place around 3:00 am when Gobinda, reportedly under the influence of drugs, attacked his sleeping mother with a dao (machete-like weapon), leaving her severely wounded.

Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the scene and rescued her in a bloodied condition before taking her to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex. As her condition worsened, she was referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, where she is now undergoing care in critical condition.
Family sources said the accused had frequent quarrels with his mother over drug-related money.
Police said relatives managed to detain Gobinda inside the house and informed the police. Acting on the information, Goalanda Ghat Police Station SI Md Nasir Uddin, along with a team, recovered a blood-stained dao, hair strands and a blood-soaked bedsheet from the scene and took the accused into custody.
Officer-in-Charge Md Shafiqur Islam said a case has been filed in this connection and the accused was sent to court on Friday.
