Police on Sunday detained Khairul Islam Sajib, son of BNP lawmaker Azharul Islam Mannan of Narayanganj-3 (Sonargaon-Siddhirganj), over allegations of extortion.
Sajib, senior joint convener of Narayanganj district Jubo Dal, was taken into custody from his residence in Dhaka’s Bashundhara Residential Area with assistance from the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tarek Al Mehedi.

He was later brought to the Superintendent of Police office in Narayanganj around 5:00pm for questioning.
“We have received extortion complaints against him. Following instructions from higher authorities, he was taken into custody from his residence. He cooperated with us and was brought to the SP office for questioning,” the police official said.
After more than an hour of interrogation, Sajib was handed over to the DMP's Detective Branch (DB) on the instructions of higher authorities, he added.
The police, however, did not disclose further details about the allegations.
“We brought him here following instructions from higher authorities. At this moment, we are unable to share further details on the matter,” said the Additional SP.
Meanwhile, DB officials in Dhaka said they are questioning Sajib to verify the allegations.
“If evidence supporting the allegations is found, the victims will file a case. If the allegations are not substantiated, he will be released,” police said.
