Bangladesh Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram on Tuesday handed over Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's message of condolence to Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani following the death of his father and former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

The condolence message was delivered during an official state condolence reception held at Lusail Emiri Palace on July 14.

On behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh, the Speaker conveyed heartfelt sympathy to the Emir and the bereaved members of the Qatari royal family and prayed for the eternal peace of the late former Emir.

The Speaker paid tribute to Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, recalling his visionary leadership and describing him as the architect of modern Qatar. He also acknowledged the late leader's significant contribution to strengthening the longstanding brotherly relations between Bangladesh and Qatar.

Prime Minister's Adviser on Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy Humaiun Kobir and Bangladesh Ambassador to Qatar Mohammad Hazrat Ali Khan were present during the meeting.

Following the condolence ceremony, the Speaker held a meeting with Speaker of Qatar's Shura Council Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim to discuss issues of mutual interest.

The Bangladesh government has declared July 15 a day of state mourning following the death of the former Emir, who was widely regarded as a close friend of Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi expatriate community in Qatar.

As part of the observance, national flags were flown at half-mast on Wednesday at all government, semi-government and autonomous institutions, educational institutions, private establishments and Bangladesh missions abroad.

The Speaker arrived in Doha on Tuesday afternoon on a brief official visit to convey Bangladesh's condolences. He was received at Hamad International Airport by Bangladesh Ambassador Mohammad Hazrat Ali Khan and a representative of Qatar's Emiri Diwan.

During the visit, the Speaker also visited the Bangladesh Embassy in Doha. He is scheduled to leave Qatar on Wednesday evening and is expected to return to Bangladesh on Thursday morning.
