A Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinee committed suicide after failing English in the SSC results published Monday in Shibganj upazila of the district.
The deceased was identified as Halima Khatun Torika, 16, daughter of Tarikul Islam of Puratan Unishbighi village under Shahbajpur union. She was a student of Chakpara Adarsha School in the upazila.
According to family and police, Halima became upset after learning that she had failed only English while passing all other subjects in the SSC examination.
At one stage, she secretly consumed poison in an attempt to take her own life.
Family members noticed her in a critical condition and rushed her to the 250-bed Chapainawabganj District Hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared her dead after examination.
Dr Shahreena Islam, medical officer at the hospital's emergency department, said Halima was examined immediately after being brought to the hospital and was found dead.
She said the girl had died before being taken to the hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of Shibganj Police Station Matiur Rahman said the student died after consuming poison following her failure in one subject in the SSC results.
He said the body would be handed over to the family after completion of necessary legal procedures.
