State Minister for Shipping Md. Rajib Ahsan stayed at the Sadarghat Launch Terminal in the capital throughout Thursday to ensure a safe, comfortable, and smooth journey for passengers travelling home for Eid-ul-Fitr.
During his visit, the minister observed the situation on the spot and took measures to maintain discipline and safety.
A BIWTA mobile court fined three launches a total of Tk 70,000 for violating schedules and departing late, while other launches were issued warnings. The minister personally inspected about 20 launches and spoke with passengers.
At least 37 hawkers were detained and handed over to the River Police for harassing passengers, engaging in irregularities, and illegally occupying terminal areas. In addition, six boatmen were detained for ferrying passengers illegally.
State Minister Rajib instructed all concerned agencies to perform their duties responsibly, emphasising that collective efforts are essential for a smooth Eid journey. He also urged passengers to travel conscientiously and report any irregularities to authorities.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and the Fire Service rescue team continued operations to search for passengers who went missing after Wednesday’s launch accident involving a trawler boat illegally transporting people to the launch.
The Ministry of Shipping has remained on the highest alert to ensure safety and order on waterways during the Eid travel period.
