Bangladesh cannot be transformed into a democratic state without structural reforms, said Vice Chairman of the National Consensus Commission Prof Ali Riaz on Monday.
"The fall of fascism occurred through the flee of the fascist ruler. But it's not possible to build this country as a democratic state without structural transformation," he said.
Prof Riaz made these remarks while chairing a dialogue between the consensus commission and Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Complex.
An eight-member delegation of Nezame Islam Party, led by its senior Nayeb-e-Ameer Allama Abdul Majed Atahari, joined the talks.
Prof Riaz said the Consensus Commission wants to create a national charter by unifying the commitments of political parties in a bid to build a prosperous, democratic and accountable state.
He said though political forces may have differences of opinion, there is also one kind of consensus among them when it comes to the needs of the nation and the state. “The biggest proof of this is that the entire nation united and was able to defeat a fascist regime. It demonstrated infinite courage and heroism against a fascist regime,” he said.
He further noted that the united resistance by political parties against the fascist regime has created scope for all —for the first time since independence—to sit together and discuss building the state.
