Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a suspected smuggler with 11 gold bars worth Tk 70 lakh in Darshana upazila of Chuadanga district along Sultanpur border with India on Saturday.
The arrestee is Tariqul Islam, 32, son of Shukkur Ali of Parkrisnapur village under the upazila.

Lt Colonel Sayeed Mohammad Jahidur Rahman, commander of the BGB-6, said they conducted a drive in Sultanpur after being informed that a consignment of gold would be smuggled to India through the border in the morning.

The BGB personnel challenged a man when he was advancing towards the border, he said, adding that he started running, sensing the presence of the law enforcers.
At one stage, Tariqul was caught after a chase and the gold bars weighing around 816 grams and a mobile phone set were recovered from his possession during the drive, the BGB commander said.
The market price of the seized gold is estimated at Tk 70, he said, those were deposited at the exchequer and a case was filed in this connection.
