Two children drowned in separate incidents in Purbadhola upazila on Sunday.
Drowning is known as ‘the silent killer’ of children in Bangladesh, claiming more than 18,000 young lives annually without attracting much attention.
The deceased were identified as Mazharul Islam, 4, son of Md Aminul Islam, and Siam, 9, son of Yasmin.
OC of Purbadhola Police Station Towhidur Rahman said Mazharul was playing beside a pond near his home in Chochaura village, when he accidentally fell into it. Later his family managed to recover his body and rushed to the Upazila Health Complex, but there the doctor declared him dead.
Not far away in Girias village, Siam was bathing in the Kangsa River when he drowned, OC Towhidur also said.
Later, his lifeless body was recovered from the river.
