United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Myanmar Julie Bishop paid a courtesy call on Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at his office in the Secretariat on Monday afternoon.
During the meeting, both sides discussed Myanmar's current political and security situation, the overall Rohingya crisis, and the repatriation process of Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN), known as Rohingyas.
Salahuddin said Bangladesh has been facing a severe crisis for a long time after providing humanitarian shelter to hundreds of thousands of FDMNs displaced by internal conflict in Myanmar.
He urged the international community to play a more effective role in finding a permanent and sustainable solution to the crisis.
Julie Bishop highlighted the ongoing conflict situation in Myanmar and assured that she maintains continuous diplomatic communication with all relevant stakeholders to end conflict and ensure civilian protection.
Both sides expressed deep concerns over the prevalence of landmines in border areas, human trafficking, drug smuggling, and their regional and global impacts.
They underscored the need for political dialogue and mutual cooperation to create a conducive environment for the safe, dignified, and voluntary return of Rohingyas to their homeland.
Additional Secretary (Political and Immigration) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Dr Ziauddin Ahmed, Joint Secretary of Political-1 Branch Rebeka Khan, UN Resident Coordinator Carol Flore-Smereczniak, Senior Political Affairs Officer Duncan Keith Wilson and UNHCR Deputy Representative Juliette Murekeyisoni, among others, were present.
