A court has sentenced three individuals to death by hanging for the murder of two youths over a dispute regarding the construction of an irrigation drain in Chauhali, Sirajganj in 2018.
Each convict has also been fined Tk 10,000, with an additional one month of simple imprisonment in case of non-payment.
The verdict was delivered on Monday (September 9) by Judge M Ali Ahmed of the Senior District and Sessions Judge's Court in Sirajganj. Court stenographer Rashidul Hasan confirmed the information.
The convicts are Shahidul Islam Saccha (50) and Nasir Uddin (40), sons of the late Abdur Rashid Master, and Israfil Hossain (65), son of the late Samesh Ali, all from Kodalia Uttarpara village in Chauhali upazila.
According to the case details, on December 7, 2018, Shahidul Islam Saccha, along with others, attacked his cousin's sons, Kawsar and Milton, over a land dispute in Kodalia village of Chauhali upazila. The attackers fled after severely beating them. Local residents rescued the victims and admitted them to a hospital, where both Kausar and Milton succumbed to their injuries the same day.
The next day, the victims' mother, Hayatun Nessa, filed a murder case at Chauhali Police Station. After a lengthy trial, the court delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused.
