Police recovered the hanging body of a university student from a house in the capital’s Jigatala area on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Rafsad Mostafa Ruhin, 22, a second-year student of Daffodil International University and son of Jamal Uddin Ripon of Sipahipara in Munshiganj.
Rafsad’s maternal cousin Imtiaz Kamal said he spoke to Rafsad over the phone around 12:05am on Wednesday when Rafsad told him that he had finished working out at a gym and gone to a salon to have his hair cut, after which he was supposed to go to the airport.
However, he could not go to the airport due to a lack of time.
Kamal said Rafsad had been in a relationship with a young woman for about a year. The family suspects that he might have died by suicide following a misunderstanding in the relationship.
According to family members, Rafsad might have hanged himself from a ceiling fan with a plastic rope in a small room beside the dining room of the flat on the fourth floor sometime between 1:00am and 3:00am.
Family members called out to him in the morning but received no response. They then informed police, who broke open the door and recovered the body.
Hazaribagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Shamim Mia said police recovered the body from the house around noon after receiving information through the national emergency service 999 and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy.
He said the body was sent to the morgue for autopsy after completing the necessary legal procedures.
