The US Embassy in Dhaka, in partnership with the American Film Showcase (AFS), hosted a screening of the documentary "A Woman's Place" at the American Centre to observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

The event drew an engaged audience, including faculty from Gender Studies, Development Studies, Sociology, and Criminology, as well as exchange alumni.

Leveraging its alumni network, the Embassy aims to support women's empowerment and raise awareness of gender-based discrimination through meaningful dialogue and engagement.

Bren Flanigan, deputy director of Public Engagement at the US Embassy in Dhaka, opened the event.

He underscored the importance of fostering safe, inclusive environments where women can thrive.

He emphasised the US. Embassy's dedication to promoting gender equality and human rights in Bangladesh.

"A Woman's Place" spotlights the challenges women face in male-dominated industries, following the stories of three pioneering female chefs as they confront gender-based discrimination.

Following the screening, a panel discussion, moderated by Syeda Samara Mortada from UN Women Bangladesh, brought together two distinguished speakers.

Jannatul Ferdousi, founder and managing director of The Dimension Packaging and Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) alumna, shared her experiences as a trailblazing female entrepreneur creating inclusive work environments in Bangladesh.

Dr Samina Luthfa, associate professor at the University of Dhaka and a Fulbright alumna, provided insights on gender issues, workplace resilience, and the importance of education and advocacy in dismantling systemic barriers.

The US Embassy organised this event as part of its broader mission to support gender equality and address systemic barriers facing women.

The screening aimed to spark critical conversations on building supportive environments for women and encourage action toward a more inclusive society.

Organised with the American Film Showcase, the event reflected the US Department of State's initiative to use film as a tool for cross-cultural dialogue and social change.
