Rainfall over the past several days has left the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Residential Area and adjacent Bakshibazar area submerged under water, intensifying public suffering and raising concerns ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
Roads, alleys and low-lying spaces inside the BUET residential zone and nearby areas remained waterlogged on Tuesday as rainwater accumulated due to inadequate drainage system.
Residents, students and local commuters were seen moving through flooded streets, while rickshaws and small vehicles struggled to pass through submerged roads.
The situation has become more worrying ahead of Eid-ul-Azha as sacrificial animals brought into nearby areas are also being affected by muddy and flooded surroundings.
Locals fear that if rain continues during Eid, animal blood and waste could mix with stagnant water, creating foul conditions and increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and environmental pollution in the densely populated neighbourhoods.
The waterlogging has once again highlighted long-standing concerns over Dhaka’s drainage system during the monsoon season, particularly in older parts of the capital surrounding the BUET area.
