A woman died and four members of a family went missing after a trawler carrying 14 passengers capsized in the Meghna River in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj district on Thursday noon.
The deceased was identified as Rayesha Begum, 55.
The missing individuals, all belonging to the same family, are Helal Uddin,55, his sons Sajib,24, and Samin,5, and daughter Samia,17. Meanwhile, Helal's wife Shirin Begum,45, and their daughter Lamia Akter were rescued alive alongside several other passengers.
The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the Meghna River adjacent to Aman Cement Factory in the Sonamai area under Baidyerbazar Union.
According to locals, the passengers were traveling from Homna to the Haria area in Sonargaon to attend the wedding of Sajia Akter and Shishir. The trawler sank while crossing the Meghna River. Local residents rescued several passengers using another trawler and sent the injured to a local health complex for treatment.
Mohammad Jahed Chowdhury, Sonargaon Fire Service and Civil Defense Station Master, said, "The accident took place around 1:30 p.m., but we received information at 4:50 p.m. Fire service personnel rushed to the scene immediately and launched a rescue operation to locate the missing passengers."
