Police have arrested a suspect named Mohammad Russell (22) on suspicion of stabbing a woman to death on Friday.
The deceased, identified as Chumki Rani Das (45), was the wife of Tapan Kanti Das, a resident of Aparna Chowdhury Para in Khagrachhari town.
According to police, assailants broke into Chumki’s home around 8pm on Thursday and brutally killed her. They also took away her gold necklace and earrings.
Preliminary investigation suggests that Russell, a CNG driver and a neighbour, had borrowed Tk 90,000 from Chumki’s son, Pranto Das. A dispute arose between the two after Russell failed to repay the money. On the night of the incident, Russell was seen visiting Chumki’s house to speak with her, police added.
Khagrachhari police confirmed that a case has been filed with the Sadar Police Station over the incident. Efforts are underway to uncover the motive behind the murder and arrest other suspects involved.
