Locals detained an alleged mugger and handed him over to police after he and an accomplice allegedly snatched two mobile phones from two individuals in the capital's Hazaribagh area on Tuesday morning.
The arrestee was identified as Md Asif, 25. A looted mobile phone and a knife were also recovered from his possession.
Quoting Hazaribagh Police Station, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Media and Public Relations) Niaz Mehedi said the incident occurred around 7:45am when Syed Rafsan, 18, and his uncle Syed Ahmed Zidan were on their way from New Market to Jigatala Kitchen Bazar.
Two muggers waylaid them and allegedly snatched two mobile phones from them.
Hearing their screams, locals came to their aid and detained one of the muggers – Asif. The other suspect – Md Rabbi – managed to flee.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and took Asif into custody. They also recovered one of the snatched mobile phones and a knife from his possession.
A regular case was filed in connection with the incident, Niaz Mehedi said, adding that Asif is accused in several other cases filed at different police stations across the country.
Efforts are underway to arrest the absconding suspect and recover the other stolen mobile phone, he said.
