Dr Benzir made the remarks while exchanging Eid greetings with police officers at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the morning.
“We’re working in zero tolerance principle to make Bangladesh Police drug and corruption free as per the prime minister’s directives,” he said.
No police member will take drugs, be involved in drugs business or have any relationship with drugs, the IGP hoped.
“We are working to extend services at people’s doorsteps through beat policing. We want to be the police of the people, with the people," he said.
Dr Benzir urged police members to exercise legal authority and be motivated by humane values instead of using physical power.
Mentioning police members’ role during the coronavirus pandemic, IGP said the police have set an unprecedented example by working for the wellbeing of people.
“The police have earned people’s trust, respect, and reliance. When you love people, you get the love of people,” he added.
Dr Benazir paid deep tributes to the martyred policemen who sacrificed their lives being infected with coronavirus. He also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members.
Additional IGs, heads of various police units in Dhaka, senior police officers and police members were present on the occasion.
