Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury of the School of Business and Economics, North South University has been appointed as the chairman of Grameen Bank.
The Financial Institutions Division (FID), a wing of the Ministry of Finance confirmed this appointment in a notification on Tuesday.
Earlier, on August 20, the FID canceled the employment contract of the former chairman of Grameen Bank AKM Saiful Majid. Since then, the post of chairman of the bank was vacant. Saiful Majid is a teacher at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) of Dhaka University. He was first appointed to this position on March 16, 2020 by the government.
After being initially appointed for two years, he (AKM Saiful Majid) was reappointed two more times for two years. The FID last reappointed him last April.
The government also appointed Southeast University's associate professor Farhana Ferdowsi as the director of Grameen Bank's board of directors last Sunday. At the same time, the appointment of Mohammad Salah Uddin as the director of the bank was cancelled.
Professor Muhammad Yunus, Currently the chief adviser of the interim government established Grameen Bank in 1983.
