Jatiya Party-nominated candidate for Sylhet-5 constituency (Zakiganj-Kanaighat) Sabbir Ahmed on Wednesday announced his withdrawal from the upcoming 12th parliamentary electionscheduled for January 7.
He made the announcement at a press conference at Sylhet District Press Club on Wednesday afternoon.
Sabbir Ahmed said the environment is not conducive to a free and fair election.
"The government had promised a free, fair and participatory election. Recently, the Chief Election Commissioner said the same thing during his visit to Sylhet. But we don't see that kind of environment on the field. So it's very difficult to participate in the polls," said the JP candidate.
He said the atmosphere has worsened since CEC Habibul Awal held a meeting with all the candidates at Sylhet Circuit House on December 30.

“During the meeting, we made several complaints and he (the CEC) took note all of our concerns,” said Sabbir Ahmed.
“However, the election atmosphere has worsened after the meeting. Currently, there is no environment for holding free and fair elections. So I am withdrawing from the election.”
The Jatiya Party candidate further said that discussions were held with the party chairman, GM Quader, regarding the election environment.
“You understand the environment in your area. If the environment isn't conducive, then withdraw (from the election),” Sabbir Ahmed quoted party chairman as saying.
